Frequently asked questions

Are your Captains licensed?

Yes, all our Captains have their OUPV license (Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessel – also known as Charter License or 6-pack License since it allows for up to 6 passengers for hire).

What about safety?

All our boats meet USCG requirements and carry all the appropriate safety gear. The Captains’ training also includes CPR and basic first aide. Brigadoon and Miss Caroline are equipped with marine VHF radios and GPS navigation. The runabouts carry handheld VHF radios and GPS units. Most local excursions stay within cell tower coverage.

Do you require a deposit?

Yes, it’s due when you make your reservation.

Is my deposit refundable?

Yes, as long as you cancel at least two weeks in advance.

What happens if it’s raining and blowing like crazy?

We will work with you to reschedule your charter.

Is fuel included in my charter?

Yes, for local charters we cover the cost of fuel. We will be glad to quote longer distance charters.

Do I need to know anything about boating?

No, your Captain (and crew if applicable) will handle the boat. All you need to do is listen and have fun!

What about snacks and stuff?

All charters will supply water and soft drinks. Full day charters will include a box lunch if desired. If you want fancier fare, just ask about available catering or you can plan to stop off at one of our favorite lunch destinations (lunch tab is not included in your charter). We can’t supply adult beverages but you’re welcome to bring your own. Please drink responsibly. Remember your Captain is ultimately responsible for your safety and has the authority to end a charter if he or she feels that anyone is intoxicated and at risk.

What should I bring?

Sun protection (cream, hat, shirt, etc. *please no spray on sunscreens), camera, soft-soled shoes or sandals (decks or docks can burn your feet during summer months and hard soles or heels are a hazard to you and the boat), and sunglasses. It’s a good idea to bring a small “boat bag” to keep track of your belongings. Cameras, phones, wallets, etc. should be protected from water. Ziplock bags work great for this purpose. Please keep personal gear to a reasonable minimum especially on the smaller boats since there isn’t much room to stow extra gear.

Where do I find my boat and Captain?

Boca Grande FL: Unless otherwise arranged, we depart from the Pink Elephant Docks located at 491 Bayou Avenue, Boca Grande, Fl. 33921.   Lake Martin AL: We can pick you up from any of the marinas on the lake or a private dock, just let us know what is convenient for you. Your confirmation will also include your Captain’s name and cell phone number in case you run into problems.

Can we swim from the boats?

The mahogany runabouts don’t have swim platforms and are difficult to get back into even for the athletically inclined plus we like to keep sand and salt out of them! Brigadoon has a transom door, swim platform, ladder, and wash down so swimming is easy but we’ll let the Captain make the call based on conditions. If swimming, beaching, and exploring are your bag, we suggest setting up an excursion using Miss Caroline as your base.
